About This Clip
Macbeth
Yukio Ninagawa’s iconic production of Macbeth in the Netherlands and U.K. in 1985 (premiered in Tokyo in 1980)
Translation by Yushi Odashima
Also known as the cherry blossom Macbeth, butsudan Macbeth, and Kabuki Macbeth
Commentary provided by Alexa Joubin: In this production, a gigantic set resembling a butsudan Buddhist household altar takes up the entire stage. The set serves as a gateway to other worlds. The altar compels the audience to dwell upon memories of the dead and the fault line between the sacred and the secular.
