The Merchant in Venice (Coonrod, 2016)

Join two MIT professors and two 2016 graduates as they travel to Venice to film a historic production of Shakespeare’s “The Merchant in Venice.” That acclaimed 6-day run by Compagnia de’ Colombari, directed by Karin Coonrod, was part of celebrations for Shakespeare’s 400 death-anniversary and the 500th anniversary of the ghetto. Learn about both the MIT context that prompted their journey and their backstage experiences including interviews with the director, actors, and many others who made it all happen. Capturing some of the richness of the performances as well, they then brought back video to MIT and integrated much into both residential Shakespeare classes and the online MOOC/MITx course “Global Shakespeares: Re-Creating The Merchant of Venice.”
